Vicki Richmond honored by Kansas City Mayor

On October 21, 2010, our Upper Reach Manager Vicki Richmond was honored by KC Mayor Mark Funkhouser for her years of service on water issues. In addition to being a crucial part of the Missouri River Relief backbone since 2004, she's worked on water quality issues in the Kansas City area for many years.

The mayor's proclamation highlighted the fact that Vicki will be awarded the international "Clearwater Award" for grassroots citizen efforts in cleaning up and promoting urban waterfronts.

Here's the text from Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser's Proclamation honoring Vicki Richmond's work, and the work of Missouri River Relief:

"Honoring Vicki Richmond on being nominated for the Clearwater Award.

WHEREAS, the “Clearwater Award” recognizes the outstanding efforts of an individual or individuals, or by non-profit citizen’s organizations, working at the grassroots level for the betterment of their community and its waterfront; and

WHEREAS, Vicki Richmond is part of Missouri River Relief, a grassroots, volunteer and equipment-based organization dedicated to reconnecting people to the Missouri River through hands-on river clean-ups and educational events; and

WHEREAS, this group has put together a coalition of public, private and citizen stewards that use a barge for massive Missouri River cleanup-up and to date has now hosted 55 Missouri River clean-ups, bringing 12,000 volunteers together to clean 537 tons of trash from 588 miles of the river; and

WHEREAS, Missouri River Relief has hosted 15 Missouri River Learning Festivals, bringing together corporate, scientific, agency and non-profit experts to teach 8,612 middle school students about water issues right on the banks of one of the nation’s largest river systems; and

WHEREAS, Vicki helped to create the Port Authority’s River Otter Day cleanup and has led this effort for four successful years; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Vicki Richmond on being nominated for the Clearwater Award; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Vicki Richmond with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for her outstanding service to the community and our waterfronts."
