"Floods and Mud - Challenges to Managing the Missouri River"

Together with our partners, we're kicking off a new location for the Big Muddy Speaker Series in Kansas City on Thursday, September 8. Robert Jacobson, Ph.D, a hydrologist with the US Geological Survey (USGS), will give a presentation called "Floods & Mud - Challenges to Managing the Missouri River".

The monthly Big Muddy Speaker Series has been going for over 3 years in the Rocheport, MO, area, bringing experts to an informal location for in-depth presentations on a wide variety of Missouri River topics. Now, in addition to the Rocheport location, the Big Muddy Speaker Series will have a monthly presentation in Kansas City. This first presentation will be at the Farmhouse Restaurant in the City Market area.

The Missouri River is valued for a long list of services it provides to society and ecosystems. Balancing all of these demands has always been a challenge. This year's flood and recent concerns about sediment management have brought these controversies to the forefront - can management of this river be balanced to increase support for native ecosystems and species within the matrix of demands we are making on the river and its floodplain?

Robert Jacobson, Supervisory Research Hydrologist for the USGS River Studies Branch will discuss some of the historical and geographical realities that we need to understand and accomodate within any management plan for the river. Through an overview of the Missouri River system, he'll outline the constraints on (and opportunities for) restoration, and a discussion of the potential role of recent flooding to affect change.

• Take exit 2C to merge onto US-169 N/W 6th St toward Broadway/Downtown. Continue to follow W 6th St
• Turn left onto Wyandotte St.
