In the early 1960's, Marion Stoddart moved near the Nashua River in Massachussetts. The Nashua had become the dumping ground for a series of paper plants and was one of the most polluted rivers in the country.

Over the course of the next two decades, Stoddart led a citizen crusade to clean up the Nashua River, working from the local grassroots up to the federal level to guarantee a swimmable river.

It's an inspiring story of the difference one person can make when they decide to solve a problem and won't take "no" for an answer.

"Work of 1000" is an award-winning 30 minute film about Stoddart's story. Our friends at Missouri River Communities Network are hosting a screening of the film, along with a personal presentation from Marion Stoddart.

Come meet this inspiring woman and share in her story!

Dec. 7 Big Muddy Speaker Series in Kansas City

"The Big Muddy Refuge - Habitat Restoration on the Missouri River"

presentation by Tim Haller, Ranger for the Big Muddy National Fish & Wildlife Refuge

(note: our location has changed for this month's presentation. The Big Muddy Speaker Series is now located at Hickok's Grill)

The Big Muddy National Fish & Wildlife Refuge was formed in the wake of the massive destruction of the floods of 1993 and 1995. Property owners along the river were able to sell their properties to the federal government at market value and the US Fish & Wildlife Service began "passive" management of the growing patchwork of river bottomlands for fish and wildlife habitat.

Tim Haller, ranger for the entire Big Muddy Refuge, will join us to describe the growth of this "string of pearls" along the Missouri River.

Wednesday, Dec. 7, 7 p.m.
At  Hickok's Grill
528 Walnut St. - Kansas City, MO (in the River Market),

The Big Muddy Clean Sweep was a success! Thanks to everyone that made it happen, from our generous sponsors and partners to many volunteers to hardworking crew!

The Big Muddy Clean Sweep was the keystone event of our 10th year cleaning up the Missouri River. We chartered a barge to stop in communities along the river for clean-ups, river education and celebration!

Thank you to everyone who made it happen! 1473 volunteers removed over 60 tons of trash from the Missouri River this fall. Keep checking in on this page as we update with more results, photos and stories.
