Feb. 21 Big Muddy Speaker Series in Rocheport
"Restoring the Big Muddy"
Presentation by Mike Chapman, US Army Corps of Engineers
The historic Missouri River was a completely different river system than what we have today. From a meandering, unpredictable muddy stream, we have reshaped the Mighty Mo into a more stable (but still unpredictable) swift channel.
Mike Chapman, an engineer for the US Army Corps of Engineers Missouri River Recovery Project, will show how we have moved from there to here and where we may be going. He'll discuss the reasons for habitat restoration, describe the varied restoration projects the Corps has completed on the river, as well as current concerns in the State of Missouri with sediment management on the river.

"The Secret Life of Sturgeon"
Presentation by US Geological Survey ecologist Aaron DeLonay
Tracking and studying the rare and endangered pallid sturgeon in the massive, muddy water of the Missouri River is not an easy task. Aaron Delonay, an ecologist working with the US Geological Survey will be describing some of the innovative techniques and technologies they use as they study the fish, its habitat and its behavior.

Jan. 11 Big Muddy Speaker Series in Kansas City
"The Missouri River: Then, Now and in the Future?"
The historic Missouri River was a completely different river system than what we have today. From a meandering, unpredictable muddy stream, we have reshaped the Mighty Mo into a more stable (but still unpredictable) swift channel.
Neil Bass, biologist with the Army Corps of Engineers, will show how we have moved from there to here and where we may be going. All the major programs affecting the Missouri River will be touched upon, including the Pick Sloan Plan, the Bank Stabilization and Navigation Project, and the Missouri River Recovery Program and all of its components.
