"The People of the River's Mouth - In Search of the Missouria Indians"

presentation by Mike Dickey, Author and Site Administrator of Arrow Rock State Historic Site

Few people know that the Missouri River, and the state named after it, were actually named for a tribe of Native Americans that lived along the river near the mouth of the Grand River. Even fewer people know much about the tribe, which had already begun to decline due to disease by the time European explorers began to encounter them.

Mike Dickey will be sharing the knowledge he gained researching his recently released book called "The People of the River's Mouth - In Search of the Missouria Indians".

Group shot after the final peice of trash was loaded onto the trash barge at the Confluence, St. Louis MO

As the keystone event of Missouri River Relief's 10th anniversary, we embarked on a series of Missouri River clean-ups rolling from town to town on a trash barge. The project was called the Big Muddy Clean Sweep, and was the largest scale cleanup of trash on the Missouri River ever undertaken.

Missouri River Relief program manager Steve Schnarr and other crewmembers will share some great stories, photos and results on the event. We'll kick off the presentation with a screening of the 15 minute film that deckhand Jodi Pfefferkorn created about the Big Muddy Clean Sweep.

As America explored, settled and learned to live with the Missouri River, it also forever changed the nature of this wild, western river. In one of the Big Muddy Speaker Series' most popular presentations, author Jim Denny uses historical journals of early river travellers, including Lewis and Clark, to conjure up the essence of the natural Missouri River.
