June 12 Big Muddy Speaker Series - Rocheport 2012

"The Great Flood of 2011"

presented by Doug Latka, US Army Corps of Engineers, Missouri River Water Management Division

The Missouri River flood of 2011 was created by a pile of unprecedented circumstances. And it was the first major flood in the reaches of river immediately below the reservoirs since they were built. Releases from the dams stayed at 160,000 cfs for most of the summer, more than twice what the Corps of Engineers had ever released before.

The devastation from the flood continues to impact the daily lives of thousands of people living along the river. Many people, from bottomland farmers to US Senators are attempting to understand what happened, what can prevent such an event in the future and, by extension, how should Missouri River management be changed?

US Corps of Engineers biologist Doug Latka will join us to describe how the flood unfolded, why the Corps made the decisions they made and what lessons were learned that might affect Missouri River water management going forward.

May 8 Big Muddy Speaker Series in Rocheport

"Six Generation Farm in the McBaine Bottom"

presented by Boone County farmer John Sam Williamson, who farms in the McBaine bottom near Huntsdale

John Sam Williamson's family has been farming the McBaine bottoms along the Missouri River for six generations. They've fought floods, droughts and the changes of the river while taking care of the rich bottomland and growing food for the country.

There's a lot going on in the McBaine bottoms, including Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area, the Columbia Water Treatment Plant and well field and the much revered site of the state record bur oak tree, which Williamson and his family have been taking care of for generations. Williamson is also the president of the McBaine Levee and Drainage District and treasurer of the Boone County Fire Protection District.

John will share some of his family history in the area and bring the story to the present, where changes in the management of the Missouri River mean changes in the ways farmers deal with levees.

"Missouri River Turtles"

presented by Stephanie Zimmer, graduate research assistant at University of Missouri - Columbia

An approach to shore on the Missouri River is often preceded by the plops of a variety of turtles as they dive into the muddy water. Because of the scale and turbidity of the river, assessing the population and habits of the variety of turtles there is a tough task.

Graduate Assistant biologist Stephanie Zimmer will share with us the different varieties of turtles on the river, what is known about their life cycles and what her research on soft-shell and snapping turtles has shown about their populations.
