The infamous flying carp

One of the most "charismatic megafauna" of the Missouri River doesn't actually belong there. Actually, there are several species of recently introduced asian carp that are changing the ecosystem of the river.

Throughout the Mississippi River watershed, and now potentially the Great Lakes, "Flying Carp" have been flopping their way into people's boats and all over You-Tube. But much of the havoc they are wreaking is under water. USGS biologist Duane Chapman has been on the front lines of the asian carp invasion across the world. He'll join us for an update on what is being learned about these new big river inhabitants and their effects on our rivers.

Canada geese are an inextricable thread of the Missouri River ecological tapestry. While tens of thousands migrate up and down the river valley each fall and spring, remnant populations of "Giant Canada geese" continue to nest in the limestone bluffs along its banks. They crowd noisily on sandbars and form giant, confused "v's" in the sky during migration. That wasn't always the case. By the 1930's, these intimidating birds were thought to be extinct. Restoration began in 1949 in Missouri, and we are all witness to its success.

World renown wildlife photographer and filmmaker Glenn Chambers will share a unique view of these ubiquitous birds and the story of how he trained geese to fly alongside an aircraft to capture unparalleled images of geese in flight through the Missouri River valley.

River races booming on the Big Muddy and tributaries

Although we like to point out that the first Flying Carp Race was a month before the first Missouri River 340, the now famous 340 mile race on the Missouri is still growing every year.

As the 340 has grown, so has the energy of a paddling race community spawning a wide variety of races on the Big Muddy and its tributaries.

Many of these races are organized by folks that cut their teeth on the 340 and saw a whole lot of potential.

The Race to the Dome, the Missouri River 340 and the new Freedom Race all contribute to Missouri River Relief, and we deeply appreciate the support of the paddling community.

"The River is Falling!  Missouri River Bed Degradation"

presentation by Brian Kelly, hydrologist with US Geological Survey.

The bed of the Missouri River in Kansas City has dropped by more than 10 feet since the 1950's. Channelization, loss of sediment and dredging are a few of the important reasons behind the Missouri River bed degrading in places like Kansas City.

Brian Kelly, a hydrologist from the US Geological Survey Missouri Water Science Center, will share more of the causes and problems associated with degradation.
